A demand letter is a formal document sent by one party to another in order to resolve a dispute. It can be a request for payment or require some other action.

The recipient is either in financial debt, has breached a contract, or has not fulfilled an obligation.

Demand letters are commonly the first step aggrieved parties turn to before taking legal action against the recipient.

What does the demand letter contain?

  • Short description of your case

  • The payment / specific relief you're demanding

  • Deadline stating when the matter must be settled

  • A statement that you have the right to take additional legal action if the matter is not settled, and that this demand letter will be served as evidence in court.
